We fill in the spaces
on a Saturday night,
some of us
clothed in sweats and slippers,
knotted, chaotic backs of heads
from an afternoon of
curled up reading;
others
swaddled in fashion,
faces washed and painted,
displaying hair art perfection.

We pass each other
again and again,
play leapfrog
from one aisle to the next,
fondle plump citrus fruits
side by side,
furrow brows
together in the dairy aisle,
mumble excuse me’s,
putting impulse items
back where they belong.

Silently pushing our carts
through gaggles
of flirting employees,
around families with
grabbing children,
past couples
kissing and laughing,

we are alone but –
not at all.
Not
at all.

It was a hoot doing image searches for singleton grocery shoppers.  Here are additional photos for your enjoyment.  In my pretend-play mind, all photo subjects live (or did live) utterly alone.

Love it!!! Something perhaps a little strange about Brucies and me. Since we were in the habit of shopping alone for years before we met, we still do it. It’s a Sunday morning ritual for me, I love it and I love your poem

Thank you, Mirle! Not strange at all, oh my gosh. I love the sound of your routine and the reason behind it. I can see myself (and the dude) bringing all kinds of Rituals in Solitude (I just made that up) to my next relationship.

Yes! Leapfrog in the aisles! Sometimes you want to add people to your Christmas card list by the time you’ve all made it through the store.

I always find myself “spying” on people’s carts. Two gallons of milk? Not a singleton. 5# bag of potatoes? Nope. A case of wine? Probably not. Two bananas torn off the bunch, half a head of broccoli, and a small frozen pizza? Comrade in arms!

Your comment made me happy and giggly; thank you! Also, I am stealing your spying habit. I never much noticed before but what a fun game. I’m on it.
